While it seems now that pumpkins won't double up when harvested with telepathy, melons still seem to have this issue. For both pumpkins and melons however, it seems harvesting them doesn't contribute to the daily missions if done so with a tool with telepathy. (I had an axe with telepathy which wouldn't trigger the mission progress, but breaking them with my fist or an axe without telepathy would).
