    Hello!
This tutorial is going to teach you how to build an automated sugarcane farm.

    DIFFICULTY: | | | | | EASY

    Step 1: MATERIALS
For each sugarcane that you want to plant, you will need:
    • 1x Sand
    • 1x Water Bucket
    • 1x Piston
    • 1x Redstone Dust
    • 1x Observer
    • Some hoppers
    • Some blocks
    • Some chests
    Step 2: BUILD!
NOTE: You can look at the screenshots attached for guidelines.
    1. First, we're going to set up the hoppers. Place down the chest in a hole, then link up the hoppers as seen below.
    2. Now, we need to place some water in the hole left by the hoppers, as well as sand next to the water. PLEASE NOTE: You can change the sand for grass or dirt.
    3. We now need to build a structure for the redstone. Build a rectangle with 2 blocks of air in the centre, one on top of the other. Place a block behind the lower air. Look at the screenshots for details.
    4. Finally, we need to place the redstone and mechanisms. Place a piston in the lower gap, observer in the higher gap, and then redstone behind the observer.
    5. Last but not least, plant the sugarcane. We're done!

Go further down for large screenshots.

    Step 3: EXTEND!
If you want to extend this build, look at the final screenshot to see an extended version.

You are wasting far too many hoppers when you can just use a hopper minecart

And the water should be hidden in the wall

I prefer hoppers; they're really easy to get, and carts often leave items and lag more.
I prefer the look without the water hidden, but of course, you can use your own design.
    Thanks :)

Just stating a much cheaper alternative.
